Reading the mic test

• The bar moves when you talk - the microphone works. Play back the recording to judge quality.
• The bar never moves - wrong microphone selected, the mic is muted (mute key / Windows sound settings), or the mic or its cable is faulty.
• Very quiet, muffled or crackling recording - dust in the mic hole, liquid damage, or a damaged mic cable. On laptops the mics usually sit next to the webcam, in the display bezel.
• This test switches off noise suppression and echo cancellation so you hear the raw microphone.
